A feast for your mind in today’s post.
Beautifully written lines, like poems, have always had a lasting impression on me. Analogies, metaphors and sometimes simple prose written with a creative touch. It has the same effect on me as popping a piece of Belgian chocolate into my mouth at the end of a long tiring day. The initial euphoria is followed by a soothing effect and a sweet aftertaste that lasts long after.
One of the main reasons I use a Kindle e-reader to read books is the highlight and Note feature. It helps me go back to these lines and relive the emotions. If you’re a paperback fan, you could use a bookmark or post-its to mark the pages with your favourite lines. I know several avid readers who make the extra effort of writing down these lines in beautiful calligraphy in their notebooks. One such reader is Noor.
Please do not be a monster by using a pen/marker on the pages or earmarking the books.
Here are a few beautiful, staggering lines that I came across in the books I have read in recent years.
Some are well-known. Others are just something I found special for inexplicable reasons. 🙂
“He had then removed Godfrey’s wedding ring from his finger for the first time since Grace had placed it there a lifetime ago. The gold was scratched and worn, the circle a little misshapen; a testament to a long and robust marriage where love was rarely voiced, but manifest every day.”
From: The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan.
Context: Godfrey has passed away after a long illness. His beloved son kisses him goodbye and then removes the wedding ring from his father’s finger and gives it to his mother.
“In love we find out who we want to be; in war we find out who we are.”
Another line from the same book which I loved.
“Friendships forged in fire that had proven to be as strong as iron.”
From: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.
“We are waiting, all of us, against insourmountable odds, for something extraordinary to happen to us.”
From: And the Mountains Echoed by Khaleed Hosseini
A more popular line from the same book. All my favourite.
“Beauty is an enormous, unmerited gift given randomly, stupidly”
“The man looks at his son, and in the glance that goes between them, I see a pair of people who’ve lost their way together.”
From: Comfort and Joy by Kristin Hannah.
You might need to read the book to be able to fully appreciate the following lines.
“A patient delegates his unacceptable feelings to his therapist; and she holds everything he is afraid to feel, and she feels it for him. Then, ever so slowly, she feeds his feelings back to him. As Ruth fed mine back to me”
From: The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

Some very interesting lines there. Waiting to earmark some of them myself.
Although in a book owned by me and not in a borrowed book 🙂
